For example, this character seems to be enjoying the ambiguity of his situation. He's asking the question but I suspect there is no real interest in getting the answer. This allows the imagination to run wild. If he ever figured it out, his source of inspiration would vanish. The bubble would burst and he'd be stuck in the concrete. There is inspiration to be found after that but living most of your life in a fantasy doesn't equip you with the means to find it.
true true. I once read a dismissal of indie rock as music by people who would rather talk about their feelings than feel them. I recognized myself some in that. It's a tough web to break free of: you wanna want to, but do you want to?
To talk about your feelings you have to step away from them. I don't think musicians remove themselves enough from their feelings to fully understand them. But if they did that they'd probably stop being musicians or would have to spend so much time adjusting to the new understanding that they'd risk becoming unproductive (musically) forever.
