Romance

Finding romance online. (Side note: I did all of these illustrations with a mouse, before being introduced to the amazing Wacom tablet. Kinda crazy, in retrospect. Tablet users out there know what I'm talking about).

The Sorcerer's Apprentice

A recent drawing. Sorta related to Pete's "Blood Meridian" post a couple days back. I drew this after reading a passage of that book that compared a character to the sorcerer's apprentice. I hadn't realized until then that it wasn't just a Disney creation. The character in the book is the mayor of a town who hires a band of mercenaries (pictured in Pete's illustration) to rid him of his Indian problem, but after they do that they stick around to enjoy themselves and end up destroying the town.

Basketball I & II

Two versions of a promotional illustration of professional basketball. I let my some personal idiosyncrasies dominate the first (blue background) and it ended up pretty confusing. I tried a more direct communication for the second (black background) and a tighter, more specific drawing as well. Naturally, having made two, I think the best approach would be somewhere in between.

Here's another old show flyer from my North Carolina days.

My First Post

"Flour" is now the co-blog of both Herpich brothers. I thought I'd start out by posting some samples from an illustration portfolio I tried to put together a year or so back. This one is a scene from Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian, in which the tension between a black character and a white character, who happen to uncomfortably share the same name, comes to a head. So to speak.
